Berghaus Olymp

Kronplatz (BZ), 2024

Schwarzer Mantel

The Berghaus Olymp building currently shows the signs of age and lacks the character befitting its prominent location on the summit of Kronplatz. Our proposal, through a redesign of the facades, creates a new appearance, giving the Berghaus the significance it deserves within the overall Kronplatz tourist resort complex.

The entire facade will be clad in carbonized wood (inspired by Yakisugi, the traditional Japanese wood preservation method), which has a distinctive silvery hue. This material lends the building a monolithic yet timeless character, interrupted only partially by loggias. The existing balconies will be opened up to create spacious loggias offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The individual wooden elements widen from floor to floor, culminating in a broad gable. After the renovation, the building will become a modern interpretation of the vernacular architecture of the Alpine region. The existing windows will be replaced with large, energy-efficient glazing, contributing to the building’s energy modernization. Preserving the original internal structure is a sustainable approach and results in significant cost and CO2 savings. The new scope of the renovation is closely integrated with the museum, a connection that is also reflected in the carefully selected materials.
