Museum of Mountain Photography + AlpiNN

The originally mountain station on Kronplatz was completed and put into service on 25 December 1963. It worked until 25 December 1986 after exactly 23 years and it was replaced by the current funicular Kronplatz 1+2. In 1974 in addition to the mountain station was built a new part as residential building and as restaurant that was used until the mid-90s.

The choice to build the new museum on the site of the old mountain station derive from the idea to requalify this place for its special connection with landscape and because he wants to give him a new cultural sense in continuity with the process that started by the construction of the Museum MMM Fels.

We decide to maintain as much as possible of the original spatiality of this room and design it as cornerstone of the exhibition space. Due to maintain the atmosphere of the old mountain station we preserve the section of this room and we redesign it as podium with a new floor to connect this part of the building with the rest of the exhibition space.

The restaurant was designed as completely different volume in “contrast” with the museum. This contrast is highlighted also by opposite materiality; the museum is designed as introverted volume in relation with the landscape only through the huge windows opened on the exhibition space.
